Adding additional fans to most computer cases nowadays is simple enough for most people to accomplish. You won’t have to worry about your computer overheating since most cases include plenty of fan mount places.

Fan connection headers with 3 or 4 pins are found on most motherboards.
A pin for ground power or negative (-), a pin for positive power (+), and a third pin for an RPM (Revolutions Per Minute) sensor make up the three-pin header.
The 4 pin header includes all of the features of the 3 pin connection, plus an extra pin for PWM (Pulse Width Modulation), which allows you to adjust the speed of your fan without using an additional speed control circuit. Using your BIOS or third-party software like SpeedFan, you can simply build fan speed profiles.
When connecting a fan to a motherboard connection, all you have to worry about is making sure it’s plugged in correctly. Typically, a clip on the rear of the pin header connection on the motherboard will fit the connector housing.
Also, double-check that the fan connection is plugged into a fan connector header. The silkscreen print on motherboards typically has the connector’s designation name.
What is the best way to connect a 3 pin fan to a 4 pin Molex connector?
All is OK if your fan only has a 3 pin Molex connection and your motherboard only has a 4 pin Molex connector. Simply line up the fan’s connection housing slot with the shroud clip on the motherboard’s header.
Simply match the color of the wires to the proper pin number given in the pin-out table above if you don’t have the luxury of things being as they should be.
On any circuit board, pin 1 will always be labelled.
What is the best way to connect fans to the power supply?
Connector for a 4-Pin Power Supply
There are two popular methods for connecting fans to a power source directly. Either a normal 4 pin power supply connection or an adapter board that transforms the standard power supply connector to a motherboard style pin header connector.
Make sure the tapered sides of the plug match the socket end if your fan has a conventional 4 pin power supply connection. Before trying to connect the plug and socket into each other, be sure the plug and socket are oriented properly.
Check that the power supply connector is correctly attached to the PCB adapter if you have a PCB that your power supply connects to first.

Then, similarly to a motherboard connector, plug your fan connector into the pin header connection on the PCB adapter.
Make that the plug groove on the fan is aligned with the pin header clip.
Using fan controllers that aren’t built-in
Adding a separate fan controller system is a more appealing alternative for certain enthusiasts. Many models enable you to regulate each fan individually, which may save you a lot of time when attempting to build up a fan speed curve profile.
In this instance, follow the fan controller system’s instructions for installing it into your computer’s chassis. For easy control and programming, some of them include a touchscreen module that installs in a drive bay.
Your fans will then be connected to the fan controller unit, which will supply the required power, collect speed measurements, and regulate the fans according to the controller system’s requirements.
Before turning on the computer, double-check all connections.
Never presume that anything was correctly plugged in the first time. Return to the beginning and double-check that all of the plugs are properly inserted and connected to the right pins. When working on your computer, never hurry and always move slowly and cautiously.
Finally, double-check that the fan blades aren’t being obstructed by cables, connections, or other objects in the computer’s casing.
To reduce the chance of anything blocking your fan blades, I’ve found that putting some inexpensive metal finger guards to the inside side of the fans is a good alternative.
Also, when feasible, install filters to reduce the quantity of dust that is drawn into your system.
