A black screen on your computer or laptop is a frustrating and annoying problem to deal with. It’s one of the most common error messages that you see on Windows 10.

If you just upgraded to Windows 10, and now your computer has a black screen, you probably want to reinstall Windows 10. Or, you may have accidentally deleted the wrong files, or maybe your computer is corrupted, or maybe you don’t have the right drivers installed. The most recent version of Windows, Windows 10, was launched in 2015. It’s easy to use, has a nice display, and lots of customization options; but, some customers have reported occasional blank screen problems. Apart from uninstalling it and installing Linux, how can you solve these black screen issues?

Users must first identify the source of occasional black screen problems on Windows 10. It may be as easy as disconnecting an additional monitor or restarting the machine to resolve the issue. More complex issues may need a reinstallation of Windows 10 or a hardware diagnostic.

What are the most common reasons of black screens?

The Windows 10 black screen, often known as the “Black Screen of Death,” may be caused by a number of factors, including:

  • You have two monitors connected, with one of them having a broken connection.

On all of the machines I’ve installed software on, the average install time has been about 1 hour. This is from the beginning to the end of the procedure, when you have a working desktop.

If it takes more than 4 hours, you might consider updating some of your gear.

Windows 10 has the ability to switch off Bluetooth and forcefully terminate Bluetooth connections for any device that is connected through Bluetooth.

If this is the case, unplugging them and restarting the computer will resolve the problem. Occasionally, just unplugging them will fix the problem, but the computer will need to be shut down and restarted more often to address the problem. 

If this is the case, the next step is to figure out which device is to blame, which should be a straightforward task.

It’s better if you reconnect everything to the computer one at a time to observe which one causes the black screen to appear. 

To resolve issues with the first Windows 10 install, restart the machine.

This is a more difficult problem to tackle. It’s difficult to tell whether a black screen appears during the first setup process because the computer has just stopped while still setting up or if it’s totally stuck and requires a reboot.

Even if you keep an eye on the LED display, you won’t always be able to discern what’s going on. 

If the computer has been left unattended for more than six hours, it’s fair to presume it’s frozen and won’t complete setting up. If this is the case, users must forcefully shut down and restart the machine. 

If consumers believe the setup process has totally stopped, they should take the following steps:

  1. Shut off the computer and, if required, press and hold the power button for 10 seconds until it shuts down automatically.
  2. Remove the ethernet cable from the modem or turn it off to disconnect from the internet.
  3. Except for the mouse and keyboard, disconnect all accessories.
  4. Unplug the computer or remove the battery from the laptop and wait at least 30 seconds before replacing the battery and reconnecting the connection.
  5. Connect the machine to the internet but do not turn it on.
  6. If the Windows 10 setup does not restart automatically, a manual upgrade may be required.

Users should be able to restart the initial setup procedure and get the computer back on track fast if they follow these instructions.

Users should leave the PC alone for a time if the download or update is still in process. If they return a few hours later and still see no progress, they may use the procedures mentioned above to resolve issues with the initial Windows 10 setup. 

To resolve problems with a defective or incomplete Windows 10 installation, uninstall the upgrades.

If the issue is caused by Windows 10 not installing completely or properly, customers may have to uninstall the upgrades and reinstall the application from the beginning, which may be inconvenient.

Before fully deleting/downgrading everything and redownloading, you should troubleshoot everything else to be sure there’s no simpler issue to solve.

Users who see numerous unexpected black screens after the machine has been in sleep mode should modify their hibernation settings, or switch off hibernation entirely. 

Toggling the “Turn on Fast Startup” option has also resolved this problem for many users, since something about the Fast Startup function prevents Windows 10 from launching correctly for certain users, resulting in sporadic black screens when the machine is awakened. 

By turning it off, the computer will have more time to properly load everything. With this option off, the computer/laptop takes longer to restart, but there are significantly less occurrences of the Black Screen of Death. 

There are a few more ways to cope with black displays after hibernation, and Windows Report explains them all. These are the simplest solutions, and they seem to be working for many Windows 10 users. 

Errors resulting from software or driver malfunctions

If customers are experiencing random black screen problems after installing a recent Windows update, the problem may be due to a defective or damaged driver. Windows Report explains how to resolve this issue once again. 

They recommend that you try deactivating your anti-virus software and upgrading your graphics drivers, among other things. However, here are the steps for the Windows-recommended remedy to this issue:

  1. Restart the computer with the original Windows disk and let the installation process continue. (You may need to hit a few of keys to get this to work.)
  2. Click “Next” when the Microsoft Installer box opens, then choose “Troubleshoot.”
  3. Select “Advanced.”
  4. There are additional commands to input after you’ve accessed the “Advanced” settings. 
  5. Eject the disk and shut down the computer after typing the instructions and seeing “The procedure finished successfully.”
  6. The problem should be resolved after a reboot.

Again, these are just the most basic steps for resolving this problem. 

If full-screen software causes the Black Screen of Death, the issue may be more difficult to resolve, and you may have to uninstall the program entirely. You can try reinstalling it after a complete uninstall, although this isn’t always successful. 

Another approach is to investigate whether there is an update available for the program. If this is the case, you may be able to resolve the issue by updating.

If you’ve recently upgraded, the issue may be that the upgrade was unstable or glitchy. You may need to return to a prior or factory reset version of the program in that scenario.

Allow time for the computer to cool down.

Overheating may be remedied quickly by leaving the computer alone and allowing it to cool down. However, you may want to look inside the case to see if anything is creating issues in order to find the source of the problem.

It’s also a good idea to vacuum or use compressed air to remove dust and debris, and to check that the fans are still functioning.

It’s possible that pressing Control + Alt + Delete and seeing the Task Manager appear is the issue.

To revert to the default Explorer shell, click the button below to download the file, unpack it, then run it via your Task Manager by selecting File and New Task. If the option is accessible to you after you’ve browsed and chosen the file, run it with administrator rights.

If your desktop returns to normal, perform an antivirus scan and a Malwarebytes (free) scan on your computer to eliminate any unwanted or infected files.

The method for resolving black screen difficulties on the starting screen is also dependent on the source of the issues. Check the power source and connections first if the starting screen displays as a Black Screen of Death. At this point, you may also unplug any peripheral devices. 

Then try the old standby: Ctrl + Alt + Del, which will bring up the familiar screen and allow you to restart your computer. Hopefully, the problem will be fixed after the reboot. 

If it doesn’t work, press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B to restore Windows’ connection with the video driver, and then reset it to reconnect the computer to the monitor display. If none of these choices work on the starting screen, there’s a chance the issue is more severe.

The simplest and most efficient method to keep dust out of your computer case is to add intake filters to the intake fans.

After that, give them a thorough rinse with cold water under the faucet.

Just be sure the water isn’t too hot. This may cause any plastic frame on your filter to distort, making it difficult to reassemble.

Allow them to air dry or use a cold hairdryer to speed up the process.

5. Take care of your graphics card.

Blow out the fan and any other vents or heatsink regions that you can see using compressed air.

To ensure that the contacts of the edge connection stay dust-free, give them one last blow.

Complete the following procedures if you inadvertently touched these edge connections (or if you believe they require cleaning):

  1. Using a high-quality pencil eraser, gently wipe the contacts until a clean surface appears.
  2. Clean all of the eraser debris using a lint-free cloth. It may be necessary to switch to clean parts of the cloth a few times until no more eraser deposits are felt.
  3. Make sure the connections are dust and lint-free by blowing them with compressed air.

Important: Make sure you pay special attention to step 2! There mustn’t be any eraser residue on the contacts.

Cleaning RAM follows the same steps as cleaning hard drives. However, be wary about erasing over any tiny surface-mount components.

6. Replace the cards, filters, and case lids as needed.

Reinstall the graphics card, filters, and case lids now that these components are nice and clean.

Congratulations if you’ve made it this far; your computer is now clean!

That should be enough to keep everything running smoothly without any crashes, stops, delays, or shutdowns caused by overheating.

Sometimes it is due to the device not meeting the Windows 10 requirements, while other times it is due to users not properly formatting their USB drives.

The settings on the UEFI/EFI may interfere with booting and installation from a USB or CD if they are not setup properly. As a result, before you begin the installation, double-check that the settings are configured correctly to avoid interfering with the operation. 

Insufficient disk space

To install Windows 10, you’ll need a lot of RAM. You can’t install Windows 10 via a USB stick if your PC’s hard or solid-state disk isn’t large enough. 

To install the 32-bit version of the OS, you’ll need at least 16GB of free space — this is the version that’s popular with tablets and budget laptops.

At least 20GB of space is required for the 64-bit version. So, in addition to the 16GB, you may need an additional 10GB to properly transfer and maintain the file.

Issues with ISO Images

The issue may be related to problems that occurred during the creation of the ISO image on your bootable USB. This may happen if you utilize an unstable version of Microsoft Media Creation to generate your bootable USB, resulting in the stick being damaged or corrupted. 

A failing Windows 10 installation will result from this issue. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to fix a bootable USB that has already been corrupted. To put it another way, you’ll have to start again with the bootable USB. 

Hardware that is incompatible
