Artdink has been developing the A-Train model train franchise since the 1980s. If you are a simulation fan, you may have played A-Train 3D: Urban Simulator for Nintendo 3DS in 2015. Despite its immense popularity in Japan, the series has rarely progressed beyond cult status in the West. Will that change with the release of the game on the Nintendo Switch? Let’s see.

All aboard the A train

A-train: All aboard! The game on Nintendo Switch features Tourism, which, as the name suggests, brings tourism into city-building gameplay. The aim is to turn cities into vibrant tourist capitals. A-Train is of course no ordinary building simulation, but is based on public transport, more specifically trains and railways and more.

As CEO of a railroad company, your job is to connect people, cities and suburbs. Not only for trains, but also for other modes of transport such as buses and freight. The main objective, as the name of the game suggests, is to build a bustling transportation company for tourists as you watch all the growing cities spring up around your transportation network.

Integrated training manual

As with most simulation games, you have to process a lot of information when you start the game. A host of manga-style characters await you as the CEO, and you’re treated to a very detailed guide from your secretary Ayaka Matsushima, who discusses the game’s first two scenarios. A-train: All aboard! Tourism may seem complicated at first, but the tutorial really provides everything you need to understand the management aspects of the game.

At the end of the training you should have a good understanding of what is expected of you. If you forget something, you can consult the game’s reference book, which explains everything in detail. Other developers should consult the manual in A-Train: All aboard! Tourism, because it explains very well what you need to do.

More than train driving

A-train: All aboard! Tourism offers much more than the usual driving simulation game. This ranges from working with local government officials and achieving their goals for the regions to improving transportation routes and recreational facilities in a given area. Meanwhile, the fortunes of the Bullet Train route are waning.

Eight scenarios

You buy properties to build networks, while keeping an eye on property prices. They will even have to deal with the stock market and shareholders. As you build an increasingly complex and powerful rail system and expand the area around your stations, the cities in that area will also gradually grow.

There are eight scenarios in total, covering the period from 1955 to 2006, with the option to download more. Map creation is also included, allowing you to create your own customizable scenarios by changing the size of the map, the land layer, and the natural resources in the area. As well as various parameters related to victory conditions.

Three levels of difficulty

Don’t be fooled by the cute presentation of the manga, because behind it lies an operating system where mistakes are expensive, especially on the higher difficulty levels. There are three levels of difficulty in each scenario. With my many losses, I went bankrupt twice, but I had a lot of fun even when I was losing money, and I learned a lot about transportation networks. After all, the Japanese are known for their efficient transport system!

Being a successful CEO

A-train: All aboard! Tourism is not a short game, but a game that you can be immersed in for hours and will probably master for much longer. Once you understand the game and manage to become a successful CEO, you will definitely have a great sense of accomplishment. But to really enjoy it, you’ll need to dedicate a significant number of hours to the game. The price is pretty high, but after playing it, I think it’s a fair price because the game has a lot of replay value!

Aids and visual controls

Visual A-train: All aboard! Tourism is okay, it won’t blow you off your socks in the aesthetic department, but it’s passable. The gameplay more than makes up for the flatness of the game’s maps. They are bright and colorful, with appropriate sound effects of trains and surroundings. Best of all, you can sit down to get a front-row view of the train as it moves down the tracks – so get in! I don’t know what the ability to drive trains means, but it always amuses me when it’s built into the game. Anyway, here we go!

A-train: All aboard! Tourism is controlled via the Joy-Con or the touch screen. I played the game mostly with the Joy-Con controls, and found them quite intuitive. The touch controls work just as well.

Supplement

A-train: All aboard! Tourism is a complex management simulation game. If you take the time to become familiar with the gameplay and learn what it takes to succeed, it will be a fun and engaging strategy game.

The high price tag may put some people off, but true fans of the genre will find a pretty solid business simulator underneath a somewhat flat exterior!

Final Judgment : I love the party.
